Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, and spooky fun! As families prepare for trick-or-treating and other festivities, it's important to keep safety in mind. AxcessPointe Health System (APHS) encourages everyone to take a few simple precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), taking precautions with costumes, makeup, candy, and decorative contact lenses can help prevent injuries and other health risks during Halloween celebrations.

1. Choose Safe and Comfortable Costumes

Costumes are one of the most exciting parts of Halloween, but safety should come first. The FDA recommends choosing flame-resistant materials and ensuring costumes fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Bright colors and reflective tape can also help make trick-or-treaters more visible after dark.

Consider using makeup instead of masks that may obstruct vision. Test costume makeup on a small area of skin 24 to 48 hours before use to check for possible allergic reactions.

2. Inspect Halloween Candy

Before enjoying Halloween treats, parents and guardians should carefully inspect all candy. The FDA recommends checking packaging for tears, unusual discoloration, or signs of tampering.

Families should also review ingredient labels for potential allergens and remove choking hazards, such as hard candies, gum, and small toys, from younger children's treat bags.

3. Be Careful with Decorative Contact Lenses

Colored contact lenses may complete a Halloween costume, but they can pose serious health risks when purchased without a prescription.

The FDA warns that decorative contact lenses obtained without a proper eye examination and prescription can cause infections, eye injuries, and even permanent vision loss. Always consult an eye care professional before using decorative lenses, even if you don't need vision correction.

4. Practice Trick-or-Treating Safety

Whether you're walking through your neighborhood or attending a community Halloween event, staying alert is essential.

Children should travel with a responsible adult or in a supervised group. Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks, carry flashlights, and avoid distractions while walking. Drivers should remain especially cautious in residential areas where children may be crossing streets.

5. Keep Halloween Gatherings Safe

Hosting a Halloween party? A few simple steps can help protect your guests. Keep walkways clear of decorations, use battery-operated candles instead of open flames, and provide adequate lighting.

When serving seasonal refreshments, choose pasteurized juices to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. If apples are part of your celebration, wash them thoroughly under running water before serving.

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween!

Halloween should be filled with excitement, laughter, and lasting memories. By following these simple safety tips, families can enjoy the festivities while reducing the risk of accidents, injuries, and other health concerns.

From all of us at AxcessPointe Health System, we wish you a happy, healthy, and safe Halloween!
